REUSE, RECYCLE, COMPOST/BIODEGRADE

Yes, please bring those coffee grounds and food scraps, used coffee compostable coffee cups from the morning commute or home just for starters!!

This is year TWO of our Reuse, Recycle and Compost/Biodegrade Program at Cobblestone as we push to be 90% zero waste this year! Last year, with your help, we were able to reduce the single use plastics by 70% and recycle acceptable items generated at market - like glass and plastic juice bottles, cardboard, paper and cans - thus reducing the amount of general waste in the Old Salem bins significantly. Way to go everyone! REDUCING the creation of waste is the name of the game and REUSE, COMPOST/BIODEGRADE are two tools that we will activate. At Cobblestone, we are replacing non recyclable/non reusable materials (a.k.a Landfill/Waste) with compostable or recyclable materials such as cups, bottles, clamshells and much more. There will still be some plastic packaging for meat and cheese that must meet industry requirements.

This year, we are adding a PILOT COMPOSTING Program at market that will accept food waste and biodegradable items. We are partnering with Gallins Family Farm who are leading the way in industrial composting and are just fabulous folks. We will have handy posters at market describing the items that can and cannot be composted. Yes, please do bring those coffee grounds from home!

Recycling as we know it is coming to an end and while we look to what the next steps will be, we hope that everyone will take a minute to look at the City of Winston-Salem's website to learn what is truly recyclable and what is not. We will have posters at market with this information. Recycling at Cobblestone is for market generated items only or something you may have purchased on the way to market that is acceptable to dispose.

Please to stop by the Information Booth for more details and the location of the recycle and compost bins. We look forward to learning along with you how to best REDUCE WASTE through this pilot program!
