READ HERE FOR WHAT IS AND IS NOT COMPOSTABLE

Food is the single largest category of material placed in municipal landfills each year. According to the Food and Drug Administration, “EPA estimates that more food reaches landfills than any other single material in our everyday trash, constituting 24 percent of municipal solid waste.” The Environmental Protection Agency reports that “...food loss and waste generates about 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions.” Reducing wasted food saves resources, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, reduces methane generated in landfills, and returns nutrients to the soil. Cobblestone is committed to “rethinking waste” in our local community with the help of Triad Compost Service, Forsyth County’s only industrial facility offering residential and commercial composting services.

In April 2019, with no composting options offered by the city of Winston-Salem or Forsyth County, Cobblestone Farmers Market enlisted the insight and services of Triad Compost Service (at that time, Gallins Family Farm) for a pilot compost program onsite during market hours. The pilot program was primarily intended to offer Cobblestone customers and area residents – particularly those without outdoor composting options at home – a drop site for their home compost. Cobblestone was also transitioning their vendors from plastic packaging to compostable packaging that could be sustainably disposed of onsite. Utilizing student volunteers, CFM spent the 2019 pilot season educating customers on what was acceptable for compost as opposed to what could be recycled or sent to the landfill.

Cobblestone customers and area residents are invited to drop off their home compost during Market’s weekly. Currently, all prepared foods and beverages intended for onsite consumption must be served in compostable packaging or containers and single use packaging is strongly discouraged. Please dispose of onsite materials in GREEN bins.

If you are interested in supporting the Community Compost Program at Cobblestone Farmers Market, please reach out to either organization about making a donation or volunteering.
