With National Farmers Market Week coming up soon ( August 4-10), we are planning to showcase only OUR producers and share with you all a tractor load of farmers market intel from our friends at the Farmers Market Coalition. All in all, shopping with local, sustainable producers is simply a continuous celebration of the best things in life - good folks, good food and good opportunity for all!

In a 2015 survey of farmers selling at farmers markets:

  • One in four farmers selling at farmers markets cultivate land that is protected from commercial development.

  • Three out of every four say they use practices consistent with organic standards.

  • 48% use integrated pest management, information on the life cycle of pests and their interaction with the environment to manage and prevent crop damage.

  • 81% incorporate cover crops, reduced tillage, on-site composting, and other soil health practices into their operations.

  • Four out of five discuss farming practices with their customers, educating them about farming and its interactions with the natural environment.

  • 69% sell vegetables, 53% livestock, poultry or eggs, 47% fruits and tree nuts, and 31% value-added products. There is tremendous diversity in the foods and farm products being sold at farmers markets.

We can't wait to see what the 2020 survey says! Let's keep those percentages growing!

We always love to load up on bouquets for our homes, but we also love to have one extra to pass on to someone special or someone who just may need some extra sunshine. Farm fresh flowers are the BEST.

REUSE RECYCLE & COMPOST/BIODEGRADE

We are adding compost bins every week! Let's keep making good stuff out of good food stuff! Bring your compost items to the market and pop them in the Gallins Family Farm bins. Check in with your vendors so that you know what 'compostable plastic looking items' they are using for packaging that may go right in the bin with your other food scraps!
