Puttin' UP and Savin' Dollars!

It is definitely that time of year where the eyes are bigger than the stomach because we want to eat ALL of the fresh food coming off the farms, orchards and inside the bakeries, kitchens and wineries! We think there are TWO great options to over eating...PUTTIN' UP!

Image+7-19-19+at+11.32+AM.jpg

Not only will you have summer flavor in the winter, the mass production is a very inclusive activity and we find that some of our favorite family moments are these afternoons spent preparing food for the freezer that makes for easy cooking after the work day, no extra shopping! Buying now and puttin' up saves dollars because the produce is fresh, local and in season. Imagine what those blueberries will cost frozen or from the west coast in December!

  1. Feed Your Masses - bring on the family and friends for potluck suppers and grill nights and go crazy with seasonal ecstasy or abundance!

  2. CAN • FREEZE • DRY
Berries, peaches, corn, beans and much more can be easily frozen with minimal fuss - a little blanching, pack, freeze. Picking up tons of squash, eggplant, basil, onions and much more - make soup bases, chilis and sauces with ground meats and the surplus of 'MATERS!

Drying or dehydrating is another way to preserve fruits in particular. Slow drying in your oven at a low heat for 8 plus hours is one way to save the summer flavor with intensity!

There are lots of good blogs and books on canning and freezing…here is a blog we think is pretty straight forward with good ideas for busy families - not that you need to be a busy family. We love our folks who freeze berries so that they have NC blues and razz with their yogurt every day of the YEAR!

As always, please check out our vendor list, fill your bags and life with as much fresh goodness you can handle and for sure stop by our info booth for tips, ideas, directions or sharing YOUR recipes, thoughts and those Saturday morning smiles!

P.S. One of the many moments right now is fresh potatoes - like corn, the fresh dug is BLISSFUL, QUICK to cook and killer any way you fix it - go for it and take extras - they last if you keep in a dark cool spot in your pantry.

Cobblestone is LOCAL - 50+ small Piedmont food businesses in one place!

The tomato — is one piece of produce that can really suck when eaten out of season. You know those mealy slices that end up on your burger? Yeah, like that. LUCKILY, we are in PEAK tomato season at The Cobblestone Farmers Market, which means a whole different breed of tomato is available—deep red, succulent specimens, firm to the touch, but bursting into juice and nearly melting on your tongue when you take a bite. NOW is the time to load up on tomatoes that not only don't suck, but will entirely change your perspective on how delicious this humble fruit can be.

Find some fun new ways to savor the flavor of the season and even extend it in your own home!
