Seed Saving Time is HERE
It is that time again for ordering new seeds and SWAPPING!
This is PART one of our SEED focus prior to the annual seed swap, SOWN and GROWN on January 25th - see details below in 'the good stuff' section!
So first, check your mailbox or go online to order those SEED CATALOGUES filled with luscious, scrumptious, glossy photos of veggies and fruits yet to be BORN in your gardens and our vendors!
There is a PLETHRA of seed catalogues available include Southern Exposure Seed Exchange(particularly focused on seeds for southern states), Sow True Seed, Johnny's Selected Seed, Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co., High Meadow Organic Seeds, Seed Savers/Seed Savers Exchange and so many more!
What makes this SEED PORN even more desirable is the fact that these seeds are OPEN POLLINATED, which basically means 'true' breed. Original characteristics are retained such as those purple carrots which are often spicy, and red and purple carrots both contain fewer natural sugars than orange carrots, which are the second sweetest of all vegetables, surpassed only by beets. The purple, yellow, green, and multi colored heirloom tomatoes all have different nutrients than standard hybrid varieties offered at the grocery store.
As heirlooms have been handed down from generation to generation , with stories behind each one, they’ve become adapted to specific places and climates. They’ve evolved natural defenses to certain diseases, pests, and weather patterns. These defenses mean organic farmers and gardeners can beat their local problems without resorting to chemicals. As growers, particularly commercial, have shifted away from heirlooms we’ve seen drastic decline in crop diversity in the United States. Keeping heirlooms in play as desired varietals means increased diversity which in turn increases resilience. When you only grow one crop variety it only takes one problem to wipe out the entire crop. Planting multiple varieties helps to ensure crops survival.
When the plants of an open-pollinated variety self-pollinate, or are pollinated by another representative of the same variety, the resulting seeds will produce plants roughly identical to their parents. The F1 hybrids are usually created by means of controlled pollination, sometimes by hand-pollination. This seeds most often become annual plants or agriculture crops.
So, get ready or like a good cookbook, enjoy reading about the HUGE number of varietals and what makes each one so special. Cobblestone vendors are using heirloom seeds and saving them, hapy toshare the stories behind and the reasons they choose certain varietals and are intrigued to try others! More next week - see you Saturday at WISE MAN!
